I am proud of helping people be safe from COVID-19”
Hana* (not her real name) is a Hygiene Promoter
Creating community awareness of Covid-19
Hana (name changed) is married and has four children. She and her family have been displaced numerous times, including to Jordan for three years.
“Having to leave your home is harder than anything I have ever gone through in my entire life. Every time we had to flee and leave everything behind my heart broke into pieces. Sometimes I wish could carry my house with us everywhere I go. But we could only take our personal documents.”
She has a university degree in history and used to work as a history and Arabic teacher for grades 9 to 12. In the past years, she was not able to work as a teacher as the war compelled her to earn an income in whatever way she could.
“I could not do the work I used to love anymore. We had to flee, and schools throughout the country were shut because of the war and now because of COVID-19.”
She now works as a hygiene promoter for CARE.
“I feel very proud and privileged to be part of a team helping to create awareness among the community. I feel good about helping people keep protect themselves against COVID-19. Many women are afraid they will have to be isolated from their children if they contract the virus. They don’t have enough money to protect themselves. A lot of my work now is similar to what I did when I was still teaching. I want to contribute to making people’s lives better, and this work allows me to make a difference and keep people safe. It is great to see how what we teach has become people’s routines. They follow the safety measures, clean their clothes, wear masks, use soaps and practice social distancing.”
